On Saturday, December 20, 2014, KODAheart was thrilled to spend the evening with the Cedar Rapids Association of the Deaf at their annual holiday party! Over 90 members of the local deaf community gathered together for a potluck dinner and a gift exchange with signing Santa. The evening opened with a presentation from the Mayor of Cedar Rapids, Ron Corbett, who expressed an interest in building a relationship with members of the deaf community.

Between them, black text and a white background is projected on the wall, reading, "The solution: Pop-up camps, Multi-day 'camp' for kids and their parents - activities designed especially for kodas, parents attend workshops - establishing a network of support. Members of KODAheart organized a number of activities to support the local deaf community and to raise awareness about our organization. While the kids were busy with an arts and crafts activity, President, Jenn Legg and Secretary, Jannelle Legg, gave a presentation about the launch of KODAheart. Members of the deaf community responded positively, asking great questions and letting us know about the needs of the local community!

A group of kids sit around a table draped with a black table cloth. In the center of the table is a three tiered cookie stand with stacks of unfrosted cookies. In the middle of the table are different colors of frosting, frosting tubes, sprinkles containers, and empty paper plates. Around the table kids bend over paper plates, adding green and red frosting, and multi-color sprinkles to ‘I-Love-You’ hand-shaped cookies.Snowman-, candy cane-, Christmas tree, and I-Love-You-shaped sugar cookies gave the kids a chance to show their creative side. Using tubs and tubes of frosting with bottles of colored sprinkles, the children of CRAD decorated their own cookies. It was a fun and sugar-filled activity!

KODAheart also sponsored a holiday-themed photobooth for the families in attendance. People lined up to play with wacky props and smile for our camera! The photos have been posted on facebook, but some of our favorites are below!

Many thanks to the Cedar Rapids Association of the Deaf for inviting us to share in their holiday party! We look forward to great events in the future!
